CEFGA’s Construction Ready PLUS students are gaining valuable hands-on experience while helping local communities as well.
In February 2020, Construction Ready PLUS Group 3 built an 8×8 storage shed for the Boys and Girls Club’s Partners in Action for Healthy Living in Decatur. The shed, which the class constructed at CEFGA’s Westside Works location, is the latest project to benefit a local Boys and Girls Club. Construction Ready PLUS classes also have built a storage shed, a dumpster enclosure and an arbor at the Salvation Army Bellwood Boys and Girls Club.
Since Construction Ready PLUS’s 2018 launch, the Bellwood facility on Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway has partnered with CEFGA to host several of the curriculum’s hands-on modules. The community projects give students the opportunity to apply their skills, work as a team and develop leadership abilities, all under the watchful eye of instructors from HB Next, CEFGA’s partner in teaching the classes.
“Our main goal is to help these Construction Ready graduates improve their skills in the trades they are working in,” instructor Kelly Almond said. “I think the fact that they are giving up their Saturdays to improve themselves speaks volumes.”
Made possible by a grant from the Home Depot Foundation, Construction Ready PLUS is a 16-week curriculum, taught on Saturdays, that gives students the opportunity to earn six advanced credentials to go with the certifications they acquired in their four-week Construction Ready training. Construction Ready graduates must be employed full-time for at least 90 days to qualify for Construction Ready PLUS.
